Making energy generation fun is a great idea, which is why a team of ex-Harvard University graduates are looking to raise backing through a Kickstarter campaign for their SOCCKET soccer ball, that generates energy while being played with. The ball stores the energy for later to then power an LED for reading, homework, study or more.
Soccer, or football to most of the world, is the biggest sport globally and played by millions, if not billions. So many girls and boys, let alone adults, will pick up a ball for a formal match or a kick around in the backyard - with SOCCKET they can generate energy for later on.
The ball is made from water-resistant ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam that the makers, Uncharted Play, say is soft and durable. Uncharted Play add that it doesn't need inflating, making it virtually deflation-proof, and weighs in at 17 oz (482 g) – only one ounce heavier than a regular size-five soccer ball. The added weight comes mostly from the charging device hidden inside.
The kinetic energy generated while having a good old kick-around with the SOCCKET is harnessed by a small pendulum-like mechanism inside the ball that turns a generator to charge a rechargeable battery. The stored energy can later be utilized in a completely off-grid way by plugging a goose neck-style LED lamp into the six watt output socket on the ball. The company claims that just 30 minutes of ball-play can power a simple LED lamp for up to three hours.
This is an energy saving product, but more importantly it also brings power and hence light to areas of the world where it is at a premium, if available at all.
Often developing countries rely on expensive, poisonous and dangerous kerosene lamps for light and then it is used sparingly - with many children unable to do their homework or reading in the evenings or at night. Now with a SOCCKET football they can play, rest and work!
