Chu Calls for Improvement in Indian Energy Efficiency

IT is vital for India to crank up its energy efficiency, claimed US Energy Secretary Steven Chu in Delhi on Tuesday.

The country sources around 80 percent of its energy via overseas supplies, hence the call for the improvement in energy efficiency to reduce dependence on expensive energy imports.

Chu said to students gathered at the Indian Institute of Technology that, "Higher efficiency really matters a lot," adding that improving energy efficiency is the best way to reduce oil imports.

The US Energy Secretary highlighted the huge financial burden oil imports put on the Indian economy, stating that the Indian Government has to promote energy efficiency, tackle the energy shortfall and combat climate change.

Chu is in New Delhi to attend the fourth international "Clean Energy Ministerial" being held over April 17-18, with energy ministers from over 20 countries expected to participate.
