World leaders confirm attendance at energy efficiency talks

At least 40 world leaders - including Gordon Brown, Kevin Rudd and Nicolas Sarkozy - have announced that they intend to be present at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen next month.
The news comes after Danish prime minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen sent invitations to 191 potential delegates through diplomatic channels in recent days.
Of the conference, which is set to take place between December 7th and 18th, the invites read: "Your personal attendance is a pivotal contribution to a successful outcome."
Mr Lokke Rasmussen is set to chair the talks, which aim to result in the creation of a new global accord to reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency. The deal would replace the 1997 Kyoto Protocol.
Other leaders that have shown interest in attending the session, but have not yet confirmed their attendance, include German chancellor Angela Merkel and president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil.
