Vital for China and India to cut emissions, EU states

The European Union has called on China, India and Brazil to put in place energy-saving programmes that will enable them to make considerable cuts in carbon dioxide emissions.

According to Lars-Erik Liljelund, special climate change adviser to the Swedish government, which has taken over the six-month rotating EU presidency, it is vital for all the major polluters to cut emissions.

This is because cuts by rich countries in the EU and the US will not be enough to meet the minimum targets, reports the Associated Press.

"We will have serious problems if China, India, South Africa and Brazil [do not get on board]" Mr Liljelund told reporters, adding that "we are entering a climate crisis".

"The problem at the moment is that if you take the contributions made so far by the United States, the European Union and Japan then we don't come up to that minus 25 per cent."

World leaders are set to meet in Copenhagen in December to iron out a new deal that will succeed the 1997 Kyoto protocol and pave the way for energy-saving initiatives.ADNFCR-2541-ID-19248771-ADNFCR
