US DoE supporting research to diversify LED lighting use

LED light bulbs could become a common feature in businesses in the US as a result of an initiative being supported by the US Department of Energy (DoE).
The organisation is supporting a study aimed at making the energy-saving lights more available by reducing their costs, according to the Miami Herald.
At the moment LEDs are directional and they are yet to be developed into equipment that can cast light like normal bulbs or fit into conventional sockets altogether.
However, their adoption is increasing and according to the DoE, LEDs will, in the near future, offer greater energy efficiency and performance than fluorescent lights.
Jeffrey Harris, vice president for programmes at the Alliance to Save Energy, a non-profit group that promotes green living, agreed with the suggestion.
He told the publication: "There's an enormous and exciting potential, but we have a long way to go before we see anything besides directional lighting."
Arizona State University recently announced that it is retrofitting some of its buildings with LED light fixtures.
