US cooperates with Native American community to reduce carbon emissions

The US department of energy has taken steps to outline its commitment to cooperating with the Native American community to help develop projects on tribal lands that reduce carbon emissions.

Energy secretary Steven Chu explained that the schemes in question also aim to create new jobs and reduce energy use.

He stated: "Clean energy projects will create jobs and economic opportunities on tribal lands, while reducing energy use and increasing energy security for Indian Country."

Mr Chu also stated that the department is committed to working with tribal communities in order to help them meet energy requirements while making use of new energy-efficient technologies.

Earlier this month, Mr Chu announced that the department is to provide more than $155 million in funds to 41 industrial energy projects across the US under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Speaking at the time, he stated that the industrial sector needs to be energy efficient in order to remain a globally "competitive force".
