UK university energy-saving proposals welcomed by sector

Several UK higher education professionals have welcomed proposals for UK universities to put in place energy-saving solutions that will help them reduce emissions by 34 per cent by 2020.

The Higher Education Funding Council for England recently launched a consultation on the matter, with suggestions to tie the amount of financial support to the institutions to their carbon reduction projects.

Supporting the initiative, Diana Warwick, chief executive of Universities UK, said that "universities, as educators, have been playing a vital role in moving this agenda forward and seeking a reduction in carbon emissions is key to this".

A similar view was expressed by the chair of Universities UK/GuildHE Sustainable Development Task Group and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gloucestershire Professor Patricia Broadfoot, who said that the institutions "must play their part in meeting national targets for carbon reductions".

These proposals could result in the emergence of many energy-saving business opportunities across the UK, which has a high number of higher learning institutions.ADNFCR-2541-ID-19293946-ADNFCR
