UK shoreline offers

There is "massive" scope for the implementation of renewable and energy management projects in the areas around the UK's shorelines, one industry expert has claimed.

Energy and climate change minister Lord Hunt made his remarks as it was announced that construction work is set to begin next week on a £42 million initiative off the coast of Cornwall to test wave energy tools.

The Wave Hub project is a large grid-connected socket on the bed of the sea that will allow for large-scale testing of wave energy devices.

It will initially operate at 11kv, but has the potential to be upgraded to 33kv after suitable components have been developed for use with the machine.

Lord Hunt stated: "The scope for wave and tidal energy around the UK's shores is massive and the Wave Hub will help marine energy developers test their cutting edge projects and help them reach commercial viability."
