UK manufacturers join energy efficiency drive

Drinks firm Britvic and road surface manufacturer Tarmac are among the first companies to join a new UK initiative known as the Industrial Energy Efficiency Accelerator (IEEA).

Launched by the Carbon Trust, the £15 million project aims to substantially cut costs and reduce carbon emissions in the British manufacturing sector by saving energy.

Companies taking part in the IEEA will work with the Carbon Trust to identify ways of lowering the energy consumption of industrial processes which can then by replicated across the sector.

"More than a quarter of the UK's carbon emissions come from industry and we've got to find new opportunities to reduce them," said Dr Mark Williamson, director of innovations at the Carbon Trust.

"The way to make truly substantial cuts is to get to the very heart of manufacturing," he added.

It is estimated that the programme will cut business costs by half a billion pounds and reduce carbon emissions by more than three million tonnes.

Earlier this year, the Carbon Trust launched its Big Business Refit campaign with the help of entrepreneur and Dragons' Den star Theo Paphitis.
