UK government unveils energy saving initiative for poor areas

The UK's energy and climate change minister Ed Miliband has launched a new scheme designed to help reduce carbon emissions in deprived areas.
The UK government has unveiled a £350 million package of measures that will fund house and whole street makeovers aimed at improving energy efficiency in some of the poorest parts of the country.
As many as 90,000 households could benefit from the Community Energy Saving Programme, which will see money invested in around 100 separate schemes throughout the country.
The UK's Department for Energy and Climate Change said the investment would help properties to reduce carbon emissions by as much as 20 per cent, through improvements in their energy efficiency such as better insulation and new heating systems.
"We will cut emissions in the UK by at least a third by 2020," said Mr Miliband.
"Concerted action shows the world we are serious about tackling climate change ahead of the crucial climate talks in Copenhagen," he added.
The minister has also backed the 10:10 campaign, which has been launched in an effort to reduce carbon emissions by ten per cent by 2010.
The initiative was unveiled at the Tate Modern gallery in London this week, with celebrities such as comedian Alistair McGowan and artist Anthony Gormley attending the event.
