UK government proposes plans to reduce carbon emissions

Rich countries have been called upon by the UK government to set aside billions of pounds to be used to tackle climate change as well as helping poor countries cope with the resulting effects.

In a speech on the Roadmap to Copenhagen at London Zoo last Friday (June 26th) prime minister Gordon Brown urged the most developed nations to contribute more than $100 billion (£60 billion) each for the initiative.

"Over recent years the world has woken to the reality of climate change. But the fact is that we have not yet joined together to act against it. Copenhagen must be the moment we do so," said Mr Brown.

"As always, this will involve a calculus of national and collective interests, with each yielding something for the common good," he said, adding that it was time to move to "real mitigation actions".

Developing countries will be able to apply for funds for their energy-saving programmes from the kitty, which richer nations will start contributing towards in 2013, according to the proposals.ADNFCR-2541-ID-19239609-ADNFCR
