UK businesses 'unaware of energy-saving opportunities'

A new survey of industry figures in the UK has indicated that many of the nation's businesses could be missing the chance to save money by going green.

According to findings released by the Carbon Trust, 46 per cent of British firms are unaware that they can reduce energy costs by replacing old equipment.

In addition, 57 per cent have resorted to making staff cuts as a way of saving money, when the deployment of energy-saving solutions could be much more effective.

Responding to the survey, energy and environment chairman at the UK's Federation of Small Businesses David Caro explained the unique challenges facing smaller firms.

"Due to their size, small businesses are in a unique position to adopt energy efficiency measures more easily and quickly than their larger counterparts," he said.

"However, small business owners are often limited by time constraints and are not always aware of where and how to access advice on how to go green."

Elsewhere in the UK, a £15 million energy-efficient council office has opened in Aberystwyth, Wales.

The building, which will be used by Ceredigion County Council, features green technology such as solar panels and a small wind turbine.
