U.S. Federal Agencies Submit Plans to Improve Energy Efficiency

U.S. FEDERAL agencies have revealed their plans for meeting the U.S. President’s call to improve energy efficiency and environmental performance, reducing green house gases emissions by 28% by 2020.

The 2009 Executive Order issued by the American President Barack Obama requested the 56 federal agencies to devise environmental plans enabling them to meet, amongst others, energy reduction targets and hence save U.S. taxpayer a substantial amount of money.

The federal agencies are the largest consumer of energy in the U.S., with spending in 2008 running at over $24.5 billion on electricity and fuel. Not surprising when you consider that the federal agencies operate in around 500,000 buildings.

To meet the targeted 28% green house gas emission cut over the next 10 years will require a reduction in emissions by over 100 million tonnes of CO2, which is equivalent to 235 million barrels of oil.

The plans will suggest various measures such as the Interior Department installing a renewable energy systems plus many other energy efficiency strategies, the plans have now been submitted to the White House Council on Environmental Quality and the Office of Management and Budget.
