The US Air Force is initiating energy-saving projects to cut emissions

A series of energy-saving programmes are about to be initiated by the United States Air Force across its bases in a bid to save more than $4 million (£2.4 million) a year and cut carbon emissions.

More than a dozen such projects are about to begin thanks to nearly £40 million worth of investment from the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009.

The funding for the energy-saving projects represents an increase of 47 per cent on last year, which highlights the Air Force's drive towards a greener existence, according to Air Force facility energy centre director Pat Mumme.

He said: "The Air Force energy programme has never seen this level of funding, which clearly demonstrates a new commitment to energy conservation and the reduction of greenhouse gases."

The project will cover a variety of conservation measures including investing in energy-saving products and renewable energy, such as wind and solar power generation.

In addition to replacing ventilation and air conditioning systems, the projects will also feature ground source heat pump installations, heating and lighting retrofits.ADNFCR-2541-ID-19295014-ADNFCR
