South Korean city project to embrace energy-saving technology

New Songdo City, the "global business hub" currently being constructed near Incheon in South Korea, will make use of the latest technology to ensure high standards of energy efficiency.
Properties in the city are set to be equipped with touchscreen monitors enabling residents to see exactly how much energy they are using, channelnewsasia.com reports.
Data from the monitors will also tell people in Songdo how much their energy is costing and allow them to compare their power use with their neighbours.
"If you create awareness you can save at least ten per cent [of energy] by just having the facts," executive vice president of Cisco Services Wim Elfrink told the website.
"Now if you start saying 'if you had put the blinds down today you would have saved 50 per cent off your energy bills', you really can use one system to connect all the different causes of energy waste."
According to the news provider, all buildings in Songdo are being constructed with energy-saving features such as water recycling systems, while traffic lights will be made with energy-efficient LEDs.
Situated about 40 miles west of Seoul, Songdo will span 1,500 acres and is due for completion in 2015.
