South America Realising Energy Efficiency Is A Power Source

Equipment providers are set to see a boost from a new focus on energy efficiency in Latin America, which will increase demand for efficient lighting technologies, industrial electric motors and appliances, according to a BNamericas.com Energy Intelligence Series on energy efficiency across the continent.
While the biggest barrier to energy efficiency programs in the region is the extreme level of energy subsidies, especially in Venezuela and Argentina, the sector is seeing renewed interest because of supply problems being triggered by the El Niño weather pattern.
The web site also reports that there is government money available in some countries.
The idea that energy efficiency as an energy source in its own right, as it is accepted in some developed countries, is just dawning on many in South America and as the way forward environmentally and fiscally.
Not that it is new to the continent; energy efficiency has gained acceptance and success in some countries in the region and is included in long term energy planning.
Energy efficiency is no longer seen as only a method of reducing peak demand or surviving an energy crisis, but is beginning to be seen as a continuous way of ensuring electricity supply, the report concluded.
