Smart meters 'will help reduce carbon emissions'

Technology such as smart meters will help reduce carbon emissions in the UK, an industry expert has stated.
Philip Sellwood, chief executive of the Energy Saving Trust, made his comments after Lord Smith, the chairman of the Environment Agency, suggested that consumers should be given an annual carbon allowance.
He stated that under the terms of this energy management scheme, if this limit is exceeded, customers should face a financial penalty.
However, Mr Sellwood stated that people should be made more aware of their energy usage and that smart meters could help them to get a better idea of how their own activities are reflected on their bill.
"When smart meters with displays are installed in homes it will demystify energy use, allowing people to clearly see what they are using and where they are using it," he continued.
Concluding, Mr Sellwood said that with better knowledge of their energy use, consumers will be able to reduce waste and enhance efficiency, lowering their own bills.
