Smart meters recommended for energy-saving in New Zealand

Smart meters have been recommended as ideal products for helping New Zealand consumers reduce their energy consumption as the government reviews power consumption.

The government is expected to discuss energy-saving proposals including consumer discounts for those consuming less electricity, according to stuff.co.nz.

However, Labour Party legislator Charles Chauvel has spoken out against the rebates, arguing that smart metering technology would be more effective in conservation efforts in addition to bringing financial gains.

"Labour strongly supports energy conservation, but making companies give a NZ$10 (£4) discount every now and then won't do a lot to save money or change behaviour," he is quoted as saying by the publication.

"Instead, Gerry Brownlee should do what the Parliamentary Commissioner has urged him to do, and set a standard for smart metering."

Smart meters will provide accurate information on the energy you use. You will be able to compare the amount of electricity and gas you use today against what you used the day before, the week before, the month before and even the year before.

The information on your energy use will be provided through a hand-held display device, via the internet or even through a mobile phone.

Access to the information will be two-way, with suppliers being able to read meters exactly and bill precisely what you use rather than working on meter readings or estimates. This will be the nail in the coffin of estimated bills.
