Scottish politician calls for energy-saving initiatives

Iain Smith, a Liberal Democrat politician in Scotland, has urged the nation's policymakers to place a greater emphasis on energy efficiency.

The member of Scottish Parliament (MSP) said that government spending on energy-saving initiatives should be increased by £100 million a year to meet growing financial and environmental challenges.

According to the Scotsman, Mr Smith spoke in favour of "a radical shift in policy towards energy efficiency".

His comments were made as MSPs discussed a new report on the nation's energy future produced by the Scottish government's Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee.

Scotland became the first country to establish legally-binding targets for the reduction of carbon emissions in June and recently unveiled the world's first "carbon budget", which links emissions to government spending.

The budget estimates that the Scottish government will spend £33 billion on core services such as hospitals, schools, roads, local government and farming, leading to the release of 11.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.
