Schools could save £70m annually through energy efficiency

Schools could save £70m annually through energy efficiency

Making schools more energy efficient could help head teachers and school boards save up to £70 million in energy bills, according to the Carbon Trust.

In addition to resulting in the reduction of carbon emissions by nearly 600,000 tonnes, the savings could help to fund 230,000 extra computers for schools annually or buy more than 4.5 million textbooks.

Speaking while launching a Carbon Trust campaign encouraging schools to realise the potential savings that could arise from being energy efficient, chief executive Tom Delay said schools should embrace such initiatives.

"Cutting energy use is a highly effective way to free up those funds, whilst engaging the school community in the fight against climate change," he said.

The organisation has now launched a free service aimed at helping head teachers to implement the right energy saving projects for their schools in a quick and easy way.

English schools currently have a carbon footprint of 9.4 million tonnes of greenhouse gases every year, according to the Sustainable Development Commission.ADNFCR-2541-ID-19222235-ADNFCR
