Perth underground to be mined for renewable energy

Renewable energy firm Green Rock Energy of Australia, which specialises in geothermal power, has announced a new energy-saving project that will see it mine geothermal power under the city of Perth.
Together with the University of Western Australia (UWA), the organisation is to tap into the city's vast underground resources for the power, which will be used to power air-conditioning facilities at the university.
Some of UWA's electricity powered compression chillers, which produce cold water for air-conditioning, will be replaced as a result of the geothermal energy project.
According to Green Rock Energy's managing director Adrian Larking, "this UWA-based renewable energy project will be the first geothermal energy project undertaken under Western Australia's new geothermal legislation".
He explained that it is also "the first geothermal powered absorption chiller in Australia and the first major geothermal project in Western Australia", adding that the firm aims to have "the first major geothermal project in production in Australia".
Not only does geothermal energy emit zero green house gases, but it also provides power round the clock throughout the year.
