New European Commission design regulations introduced

Common industrial and household electrical appliances such as televisions and fridges are set to be more energy-efficient thanks to new European Commission design regulations introduced to achieve this.
Four eco-design regulations have been introduced by the commission in a bid to achieve its target of cutting primary energy consumption in the region by 20 per cent by 2020.
"This package is a milestone on the road to achieving our energy-efficiency, climate change and economic recovery objectives," commented energy commissioner Andris Piebalgs.
"It will save impressive amounts of electricity, CO2 emissions and electricity costs, while creating jobs and boosting the deployment of highly innovative technologies."
More energy-efficient electric motors and a shift to 'intelligent' heating systems are expected to come about as a result of the regulations, which follow five such mandatory eco designs introduced a while ago.
These regulations, which are aimed at fulfilling the Ecodesign Directive that was ratified in 2005, will ensure that only the most energy-efficient products are available on the market.
Electric motors can be made substansially more energy efficient with the addition of motor controllers such as Enigin's iMec.
