New energy-saving scheme unveiled in London

Businesses in certain parts of London will soon be working to a new set of energy-saving targets following the announcement of a new green initiative.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson has declared that ten 'low-carbon zones' are to be established in the English capital, with each of these areas receiving a grant of at least £200,000 to promote energy-saving initiatives.
Each zone has been given a target of cutting emissions by 20.12 per cent before 2012, when the Olympic Games will be held in London.
Local businesses will be encouraged to work in partnership with community organisations and utility providers to achieve their energy-saving targets, with the best-performing zone expected to reduce their emissions by an average of 23 per cent by 2012.
Commenting on how the ten zones were selected, Mr Johnson said: "There was a high calibre of bids from across the boroughs and it was a difficult choice, but the winning entries are championing the latest technologies, which will help us to become a leading low carbon city."
Mr Johnson is working towards a wider target of delivering a 60 per cent reduction in London's carbon emissions by 2025.
