New energy efficiency initiatives announced by Obama administration

The US government has announced "aggressive" moves to promote energy efficiency among American business and residential consumers, which could result in the take up of more energy-saving products.
President Barack Obama and energy secretary Steven Chu made the announcement this week, arguing that going green will not only save the environment, but save money and create jobs too.
According to Mr Obama, making the US more energy efficient is "one of the fastest, easiest, and cheapest ways" to make the country's economy stronger and cleaner.
"By bringing more energy-efficient technologies to American homes and businesses, we won't just significantly reduce our energy demand; we'll put more money back in the pockets of hardworking Americans," he stated.
Lighting consumes seven per cent of all US energy needs and one of the proposals seeks to address this by making major changes to conservation standards in household and commercial lighting products.
The developments will also help to reduce the carbon footprint of the US, which is the largest followed by China.
