Millions Can be Saved Through Energy Efficiency in Trinidad and Tobago
TRININDAD and Tobago’s Energy Minister, Kevin Ramnarine, reckons millions of dollars could be saved by the islands’ industries if they invested in energy efficiency and saving.
Ramnarine raised the point during the launch of the Energy Service Company (ESCO) committee in Port of Spain at the end of last week, explaining that an audit of the varied operations at the Point Lisas Industrial Estate in Couva revealed that an investment of $13 million in energy efficiency could save companies as much as $2.8 million a year.
"If implemented it could yield significant annual savings equivalent to a payback of less than five years on average," Ramnarine said.
The Energy Ministry has already examined ways to improve energy efficiency across various governmental ministries.
"ESCOs can be considered the vehicles to conduct these audits and promote the installation of energy saving systems," he added.
"Therefore with the support of the energy management practices there is a significant potential for reduced energy consumption at the Point Lisas Estate.....the same audit also revealed carbon savings to the order of 47,000 tonnes per annum.
"Adopting energy efficient technologies save money and frees energy resources for other economic ventures. Increasing energy efficiency will strengthen our energy security, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, complement renewable energy strategies and generally promote sustainable development," he concluded.
Companies undertaking energy saving investments can also apply for an allowance for energy efficiency investments from the government.
