Mandatory EU energy-saving initiative comes into force in September

Businesses and domestic consumers throughout Europe will be required to start phasing out energy inefficient lights from the beginning of September.
A mandatory EU phase out of 100W and frosted incandescent lightbulbs comes into effect from September 1st and, in addition to cutting carbon emissions, the development could result in energy-saving business opportunities.
UK environment minister Dan Norris welcomed the move saying that consumers can no longer afford to rely on light bulbs that waste 95 per cent of their energy as heat.
"We are glad the EU has put this measure in place to stop the waste of energy and money from old-fashioned high energy bulbs," he stated.
"The UK has had a successful voluntary initiative in place for a few years, and now the rest of the EU will follow suit on a mandatory basis."
EU member states agreed to the initiative last December.
According to the UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps have become cheaper and some are now available at similar prices to old-fashioned bulbs.
