Innovation is "crucial" in the development and implementation of new energy efficiency strategies, one industry expert has avowed.

US agriculture secretary Tom Vilsack made his remarks as his country's departments of agriculture and energy announced that grants of more than $24 million (£14.4) have been allocated to a number of projects around the country.

These include research and development efforts to produce bioenergy, high-value bio-based products and biofuels.

In a statement, the body said that products created as a result of the energy efficiency schemes are predicted to reduce carbon emissions by at least 50 per cent when compared to fossil fuels.

Mr Vislack said: "Innovation is crucial to the advancement of alternative, renewable energy sources - and these awards will spur the research needed to make significant progress in bioenergy development."

Earlier this month, US energy secretary Steven Chu announced in excess of $38 million in energy efficiency funding to states including Alaska, Utah, West Virginia and Kansas under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
