India urged to prioritise energy-efficient buildings

A leading architecture professor has emphasised the need for energy-saving construction projects in India.

Speaking at this week's Building Green Cities conference in Chandigarh, Professor Dietmar Eberle said that developing nations have an opportunity to harness the latest in green technology when creating new structures.

According to online news provider Indopia, he claimed that it is possible to build infrastructure with energy-saving solutions included at no additional cost.

"Being a developing country, [India] is concentrating on building its infrastructure and this is the appropriate time to invest in energy-efficient buildings and transport, rather than wasting precious resources on constructing energy-guzzlers," Professor Eberle said.

The Building Green Cites conference was organised by the Embassy of Switzerland in India, the Indian Institute of Architects and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, where Professor Eberle currently teaches.

According to the India Post, the country already has almost 30 million sq ft of energy-efficient buildings, up from just 20,000 sq ft in 2003.
