Illinois residents advised to use energy-saving Christmas lights

An Illinois-based utility company has urged people to consider energy-saving technology when decorating their homes and offices for the festive season.

Lighting up a property for Christmas can be made significantly more energy efficient by using LEDs instead of incandescent bulbs, according to Ameren Illinois Utilities.

The firm claimed that festive light strings with the Energy Star certification will consume 75 per cent less electricity than old-fashioned bulbs this Christmas.

In addition, it stated that total energy usage in the US could be reduced by more than two billion kilowatt hours if all light products sold over the holiday period were Energy Star qualified.

The Energy Star rating is awarded to products that have met standards of energy efficiency established by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Energy.

Last week, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that the city's public Christmas tree at the Richard J Daley Center will be decorated with 7,000 energy-saving LED lights this year.
