Global businesses 'responding to energy challenge'

A growing number of major corporations are recognising the need to prioritise energy-saving initiatives, new research has indicated.

Results from the Pew Center's latest Energy Efficiency Study show that many large businesses realise that fuel prices will continue to increase, making energy-saving measures an increasingly important part of their daily operations.

According to the research, firms are now setting up company-wide energy efficiency targets, with an annual improvement of 2.2 per cent found to be the current average.

The publication of the survey, which saw 65 questions completed by 48 major companies, coincides with the launch of the Pew Center's new web portal to help businesses develop strategies for energy efficiency.

"Well executed energy efficiency strategies should form the basis of any corporate response to the volatility of energy prices and impending mandatory climate policy," commented Pew Center president Eileen Claussen.

The organisation is due to publish a report detailing methods used by large corporations to improve their energy performance at a conference in Chicago next April.
