Frito-Lay building recognised for energy-saving achievements
Snack food company Frito-Lay has been commended by the US Green Building Council for the energy-saving performance of its headquarters in Texas.
The building received a Gold certificate under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) scheme, which recognises high standards in green design and construction.
Frito-Lay, which is a division of PepsiCo, carried out a major retrofitting project to equip its headquarters in the Dallas suburb of Plano with the latest energy-saving technology.
"We completed a thorough analysis of our facility workings and evaluated new technologies to find strategic sustainable solutions," explained George Guck, director of facilities and corporate services at Frito-Lay North America.
All hot water in the building is now produced by a solar thermal heating system, while new lighting apparatus makes use of a 'daylight harvesting' feature to automatically switch off bulbs when rooms contain enough natural light.
According to Frito-Lay, its Texas base is the only existing building in the state to be awarded Gold LEED certification.
The firm, which merged with Pepsi-Cola to form PepsiCo in 1965, produces popular chip brands such as Lay's, Doritos and Cheetos.
