Facility managers should urge tenants to use energy saving products

Facilities management companies should do more to reduce their carbon footprint by urging their occupiers to use energy saving products and have good energy conservation measures, it has been argued.
Large property companies are already taking this route towards conservation, according to Dave Farebrother, environmental director at FTSE 100 company Land Securities.
At the moment most legislation geared towards conservation seems to be aimed at new buildings but the message needs to be widened to cover existing building stock, he stated.
"It is about changing behaviours, good habits, better communication, liaison and motivation between the occupiers, letting agents, and the facility companies that control the buildings," said Mr Farebrother.
"This is something I think we have cracked but which is a problem for the modular masses," he added, highlighting the fact that Land Securities has reduced its emissions significantly over the last four years.
Unless more is done to tackle climate change temperatures could soar to 41 degrees C by 2080, the UK Climate Projections 09 report recently warned.
