EPA energy-saving initiative 'saving Americans thousands of dollars'

An energy-saving initiative in the US last year resulted in more households going green and saving thousands of dollars, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced.

Thanks to the EPA's Energy Star label, nearly 17 per cent of all single-family homes built across the country in 2008 were deemed fit to receive the approval rating, showing the homes are 20 to 30 per cent more efficient than the typical residence.

According to the EPA, energy-saving products in the Energy Star qualified properties, of which nearly 940,000 have been built so far, helped Americans save more than $250 million in utility bills last year alone.

"Features like properly installed insulation, high-performance windows and high-efficiency heating and cooling can reduce home energy needs by 20 to 30 per cent, said EPA administrator Lisa Jackson.

Explaining that going green "saves American families thousands of dollars on their utility bills", she went on to state that "even in a difficult market, the interest in Energy Star qualified homes keeps rising".

More than 100,000 new homes were awarded the Energy Star in 2008.ADNFCR-2541-ID-19252821-ADNFCR
