Energy-saving products help Chinese government save money

Energy-saving products made up the bulk of purchases made by government departments in China in 2008, which saved taxpayers in the country a lot of money, it has been reported.

Quoting a report by the China Financial and Economic News, the People's Daily Online reports that energy-saving products made up 93.5 per cent of all products bought by central government departments.

Overall purchase costs hit 58.98 billion yuan (£5.36 billion) during the year, according to assistant finance minister Zhang Tong, who revealed that the figure was a saving of 5.87 billion yuan.

The Procurement Center was in charge of ensuring strict guidelines for energy-saving product purchases were followed as well as initiating a raft of energy-saving, environmentally-friendly procurement projects.

Some of the projects included cleaning central air conditioners, adopting green cookware and solar photovoltaic power generation, reported the People's Daily Online.

The Chinese government is promoting the adoption of energy-saving products in the country and last year announced that 13 domestic and foreign-invested bulb manufacturers will be supported to produce energy-saving light bulbs, according to Cens.com.ADNFCR-2541-ID-19255014-ADNFCR
