Energy-saving plans unveiled in Colorado

Energy-saving plans unveiled in Colorado

A Colorado city plans to carry out energy audits with a view to retrofitting 1,300 of its older commercial buildings.

Using a structure known as the Learning Source building as a model for the project, policymakers in Lakewood hope to slash energy consumption, reduce bills and create new jobs for the city, cbs4denver.com reports.

An alliance known as the Greening Lakewood Business Partnership has been set up to oversee the initiative, which aims to cut the energy costs of each property by at least 50 per cent.

"It's about saving energy [and] it's about creating more income in our Lakewood economy because our business owners don't have to spend money on energy bills," explained Lakewood mayor Bob Murphy.

He told the news provider that the project will also boost "workforce development and the creation of jobs".

The Learning Source building has already been subjected to an energy audit and work is underway to make the structure an example of how green building technology can be used to reduce energy costs.

Situated in Jefferson County, Lakewood is Colorado's fourth most populous city and home to the Denver Federal Center, which employs over 6,000 people.
