Energy-saving measures top list of valuable UK home improvements

Fuel efficiency and energy-saving measures are providing UK home improvers with the most additional value for their properties, new research has suggested.
According to Halifax, the increasing desire among consumers to reduce carbon emissions has seen a large increase in the perceived value of energy-saving products such as loft insulation.
Research by the home insurance provider indicated that efforts to improve a home's energy efficiency cost an average of £1,722 for UK homeowners.
However, Halifax noted that this is money well spent as the perceived value added to a property by such energy-saving products is £4,327 - more than two-and-a-half times the initial outlay.
Stephen Noakes, commercial director at Lloyds Banking Group, which owns Halifax, said that the research indicated how low-cost home improvements can often add the most perceived value to a home.
"Energy-efficiency measures may not only entice the 'green' buyer, but will also help to reduce heating bills and improve a home's energy efficiency, a report on which is part of the home information pack," he added.
Last month, the Carbon Trust suggested that energy conservation schemes could help UK headteachers to save as much as £70 million a year in power and heating costs.
