Energy-saving initiatives 'help economy to grow'

The deployment of energy-efficiency programmes encourages economic growth, supports new businesses and creates new jobs, as well as helping the environment, a report has stated.
Environment Northeast, a non-profit organisation carrying out research into green energy solutions in north-eastern America and eastern Canada, recently published a study into the potential impact of major energy-saving projects across New England.
The report estimates that if $27.2 billion was invested in energy efficiency programmes throughout the region over the next 15 years, $180 billion would be pumped back into local economies.
Derek Murrow, one of the authors of the report, told the Boston Globe that these figures are "really impressive".
He added: "A lot of states and especially Massachusetts have made a significant commitment to capturing energy efficiency . . . [and] moving forward with those opportunities is a real need, especially in a time of economic downturn."
Last month, it emerged that Massachusetts has set aside $15 million in federal stimulus funding for "high-performance" buildings that use the latest technology to achieve major reductions in energy consumption.
