Energy-efficient lighting installed in Tiananmen Square

A major installation of energy-saving landscape lights in Tiananmen Square is now complete, according to Chinese sources.

The website chinacsr.com reports that thousands of energy-saving lights have been deployed in the historic centrepiece of Beijing, reducing the total electrical output of Tiananmen Square from 210.2KW to 100KW.

According to the news provider, energy-efficient LED lighting has also been installed in and around Zhengyangmen, the ancient gate that stands at the south end of the precinct.

These lights will cut the energy consumption of Zhengyangmen by approximately 20 per cent, while the overall project is expected to deliver significant reductions in Tiananmen Square's carbon emissions.

The drive to make the square greener began in 2006, when the 249 incandescent lamps surrounding the precinct were replaced with energy-efficient bulbs, worldwatch.org reports.

Spanning 440,000 square metres, Tiananmen Square is the world's largest urban square and has played a key role in Chinese history, most notably as the venue for the civilian uprising of 1989.
