Energy-efficient buildings on the way in New Delhi

Energy-efficient buildings on the way in New Delhi

The government of New Delhi has released details of a new plan to increase the energy-saving performance of large buildings in the Indian capital.

An agreement between the local authority and research organisation The Energy and Resources Institute, which is based in the city, will aim to make 100 properties greener by retrofitting them with energy-saving measures.

Several high-profile buildings are set to take part in the project, including the Delhi Secretariat and the residence of Delhi's chief minister Sheila Dikshit, the IANS news agency reports.

Speaking about the initiative, Ms Dikshit told the news provider: "This is just the beginning. For us, energy and water conservation is extremely important.

"We will carry on with this programme as it is a part of sustainability and [the] growth of the world."

According to the Times of India, the Delhi government is aiming to turn the Indian capital into the world's most environmentally-friendly city.

The eyes of the sporting world will be on Delhi next October, when it hosts the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
