Energy Efficiency - The World Under A New Light

100W and frosted incandescent light bulbs have just been banned in the EU, after an odd 200 years of service.

The attempt to curb climate change is the source of this EU initiative. Energy efficient fluorescent or halogen lighting is up to 80% more efficient than its incandescent counterpart, which should be totally replaced by 2012.

The legislation also encompasses minimum standards for efficient commercial and industrial lighting.

Incandescent light bulbs should also be banned in other countries in the near future, including the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the Philippines.

Incandescent light bulbs waste incredible amounts of electricity because only 10-20% of the energy sourced is actually turned into light. The remaining 80-90% is converted into heat! The generated heat will then make air conditioning units work harder to cool the temperature down, which again wastes energy. All these factors contribute to making energy bills so high.

Today, an energy-efficient lighting technology is giving businesses the opportunity to save energy and therefore reduce their energy bills. The new efficient and intelligent lighting systems available on the market can save companies at least 70% on their lighting costs.

By using energy efficient lighting, a business actively contributes to saving energy, which in turn reduces carbon emissions and preserves the environment. As policies around energy efficiency standards tighten, businesses are given opportunities to apply for funding aids in order to install energy efficient systems in their premises, which will also have the effect of boosting their environmentally-friendly image.

The world's resources are rapidly diminishing, and climatic changes are already occurring more and more frequently, sometimes creating catastrophic events (recent floods in Cumbria, increasing number of tornados, melting of ice sheets...). Now is the time to take serious action by turning to energy efficient products, such as more efficient lighting appliances, that will help minimise climate change, reduce CO2 emissions, and provide extra income through energy cost reduction.
