Energy efficiency 'can aid construction sector'

Energy efficiency initiatives can provide the construction and property sectors with long-term benefits, an industry commentator has asserted.
Tim Pullen, eco expert and author, made his remarks after the Self Build Housing Market - UK 2009-2013 report from AMA Research showed that the number of self-build property completions is expected to stand at 13,500 in 2009 and 14,000 in 2010.
He said that building energy efficiency into the creation of a structure can help to reduce carbon emissions, lower maintenance costs and reduce outgoings for occupants.
Mr Pullen stated that by ensuring that energy efficiency is considered when buildings are created, their long-term value can be secured.
He said that buildings will often reach a point where it is no longer economic to maintain them and so those that are more energy efficient will stand out from the crowd and last longer.
"Therefore, [the building] is better than the house next door and therefore it is worth more. It is a fairly simple thing," he concluded.
