Energy conservation 'can save businesses money'

Energy conservation measures have the potential to save businesses and individuals hundreds of billions of pounds around the world in terms of their electricity bills, it has been claimed.
According to the UK Guardian's environment expert Adam Vaughan, savings made by energy-saving programmes could increase in the future as the cost of electricity rises.
He cited statistics from the Carbon Trust, which suggest that businesses could reduce their bills by up to ten per cent just by following energy conservation schemes such as automatically switching off computers at night.
"Higher carbon trading prices in future could also make energy-efficiency more financially attractive for polluting industries," Mr Vaughan went on to predict.
Writing in the newspaper, he also highlighted the distinction between energy-efficiency and energy-saving measures, explaining that the latter is a much wider term that also encompasses behavioural changes to reduce overall energy usage.
Last week, the US Environmental Protection Agency revealed that energy-saving measures helped 940,000 American households to save over $250 million in 2008.
