Employees can play role in energy-saving efforts

Employers should actively involve employees in their energy-saving initiatives in order to make the schemes more effective, a UK-based public sector trade union has urged.

Both public and private sector organisations should adopt this attitude according to Unison, which stated that cutting carbon emissions is a team effort requiring everyone's contributions.

Unison general secretary Dave Prentis explained that "workplaces are estimated to be responsible for 50 per cent of carbon emissions, so it is vital that they take responsibility for greening our future".

He went on to state that workers can also take charge of conservation efforts by coming up with projects aimed at spurring both managers and staff into setting up green initiatives.

The union has launched a pilot project in Wales that will train "green champions" who will come up with initiatives to make their workplaces green.

Real time energy-monitoring graphical displays of the results of power saving efforts, such as Enigin's Eniscope, have proved to be a major influence in enabling employees to make a significant impact on the reduction of carbon emissions in the workplace.ADNFCR-2541-ID-19299524-ADNFCR
