Eliminate red tape to encourage energy-saving initiatives, LGA urges

The Local Government Association (LGA) has called on the UK government to set up a single kitty worth £7 billion aimed at promoting and supporting energy-saving initiatives.
In a report entitled From Kyoto to Kettering, Copenhagen to Croydon, the LGA has stated that the government should cut red tape surrounding green initiatives in order to encourage more people to go green.
The report said that the Community Energy Action Fund worth £7 billion should be set up with the aim of allowing both councils and private investors to bid for local projects.
LGA environment board chairman Paul Bettison said: "Too much money is being wasted on a raft of green schemes and people who need help insulating their homes are not getting it.
"A national insulation programme would dramatically reduce carbon emissions and harness the desire of householders to make their homes more energy efficient."
The report comes amid news that four new eco-towns in the UK with more than 5,000 homes each have been proposed by the government as part of a major energy-saving programme.
