Dublin's Energy Efficient Building Reveals Future

A NEW office block unveiled in Dublin yesterday is one of the most energy efficient buildings in Ireland producing substantial financial savings for tenants.

Chartered Land Grand Canal Square office development in Dublin’s South Docklands, uses 60 per cent less energy than a more traditional structure, which will save tenants €200,000 per annum in energy bills for every 10,000 square metres of office space leased.

Last year, Ireland introduced new building regulations which require developers to make all new buildings 40 per cent more energy efficient. Even tougher standards requiring 60 per cent energy improvements are to be introduced later this year.
Irish Environment Minister John Gormley unveiled a plaque at the new development, designed by renowned architect Daniel Libeskind.

"Climate change is an issue in terms of energy usage but we're going to continue to see a price rise when it comes to dwindling oil and gas so we have to be aware that this is the way to go," Mr Gormley said.

"I think it's relatively easy to do. This is not huge extra expenditure. This year we're going for 60 per cent and I hope it will be signed into law by the end of the year, as promised."
Greater awareness of energy efficiency in commercial and public buildings is increasing across the globe, and this latest development in Ireland highlights the savings to be made in new developments and through retrofitting energy efficiency in existing buildings.
