Councils 'can help communities reduce carbon emissions'

Councils can help their local communities to reduce carbon emissions and become more energy efficient, one industry expert has asserted.
David Kidney, Labour MP for Stafford and parliamentary under-secretary of state in the Department of Energy and Climate Change, made his remarks at the Sustainable Communities Conference, which took place in London yesterday (November 12th).
He said that it is important for governments to lead by example when it comes to taking steps to reduce carbon emissions and implement energy efficiency strategies.
Mr Kidney explained that this is why all governmental departments are rolling out long-term plans to augment their green credentials and enhance the effectiveness of their estate and operation management.
However, he stated that the wider public sector must also lead by example.
"Local authorities, crucially, can help their communities become low carbon. Like all other parts of the public sector, they need to lead by example in their own operations and the management of their assets," he concluded.
