Construction industry 'reacting to low-carbon demand'

The British construction sector will become more in tune with energy-saving business opportunities as it emerges from the recession, an industry expert has claimed.

Brian Berry, director of external affairs for the Federation of Master Builders in the UK, said that construction firms are adapting to the growing demand for green products and services.

He suggested that a focus on energy efficiency in housing and commercial buildings will create new opportunities for the sector to use innovative technologies.

"The need to move towards a low carbon economy represents the best future for the construction industry," Mr Berry said.

"New skills and new technology will have to be adapted to rise to that challenge."

In terms of green business opportunities for construction firms, Mr Berry explained that the current market for retrofitting existing properties is worth "between £350 billion and £650 billion a year".

Mr Berry's comments follow the UK government's announcement of a major review of the construction industry, which was launched by business secretary Lord Mandelson last week.
