China's economic agency working on energy conservation guidelines

Plans to govern how the energy-saving sector is operating and developing are being worked on by China's economic planning agency.
The National Development and Reform Commission has announced that it is formulating a development plan for the fast growing industry and environmental protection.
According to a statement posted on the economic agency's website, the development is designed to accelerate "the cultivation of emerging industries and aiming at a commanding height in future economic competition".
It is hoped that the plan will also help counter the global financial crisis and put the country in a position to "occupy the vantage point in future economic competition".
Energy-saving products and technologies will be incorporated into the proposals, which will also champion sustainable energy use.
On a recent visit to China, United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-moon called on the country's government to support and invest in energy-saving projects and technologies.
The statement was made while launching an energy-saving initiative known as the Green Lights Project, which is aimed at promoting the use of energy-saving lamps.
