Carrefour China to invest in energy-saving upgrades

A French-based company with retail interests in China is to invest in energy-saving renovations and products across its stores in the country in a bid to reduce its carbon footprint.
China Retail News reports that Carrefour China is planning to invest between CNY50 million (£4.5 million) and CNY60 million in energy efficiency upgrades in its outlets in 2010.
An official from the company's asset engineering department told the publication that energy conservation is becoming increasingly important for traditional retailers and the company is keen to become more efficient.
Energy-saving initiatives and projects put in place by the company have already helped it to reduce its electricity consumption significantly and save millions of yuan.
All of Carrefour China's 139 stores are undergoing efficiency upgrades, which include new technologies aimed at helping cut electricity usage in lighting, air-conditioning and refrigeration.
In July the company opened its 138th Carrefour Hypermarket in Kunming city.
