Careful construction 'leads to energy efficiency'

A construction consultant based in the Bahamas has claimed that the key to high-performance energy saving lies in intelligent building methods.

Kymenski Kemp, an architectural engineer and founder of the Caribbean Greensafe company, told the Tribune that an energy-efficient property can reduce the amount of energy used in a normal building by 30 to 50 per cent, without resorting to alternative energy sources.

According to the newspaper, his company's first Emerald Breezes real estate development, a 24-unit villa complex, is already in the pipeline.

"If you start with your structure and make it energy efficient, it's very feasible to be in the 30 to 50 per cent [energy] savings range without going to alternative energy sources and, in some cases, you can even leapfrog that - up to 60 to 70 per cent," he told the publication.

Brian Berry, director of external affairs for the Federation of Master Builders in the UK, recently said that the British construction industry is reacting to the demand for green properties.

He claimed that the sector will begin to take advantage of more energy-saving business opportunities as it emerges from the recession.ADNFCR-2541-ID-19383064-ADNFCR
